Carex elliottii can be distinguished by its cespitose habitat (rhizomes lacking or short) compared to C. louisianica and C. bullata which are long rhizomatous. Read more in Weakley's Flora.
Members of the section Vesicariae have inflated bladdery perigynia that fit very loosely around the achene (seed), and which have sharp, 2-pointed beaks. Carex elliottii has the smallest perigynia of the group and the shortest beaks. Thus it does not stand out in the field. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.
