Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
Downy Goldenrod's stems and leaves are covered with tiny whitish hairs that usually give the plant a grayish-green tone. The inflorescence is elliptical (to narrowly conical) and tapered to both ends. In the field it resembles S. erecta and S. roanensis, but those plants are smooth (glabrous) at least below mid-stem. Its involucral bracts are attenuate. Read more at Vascular Plants of North Carolina.

If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
Or try alternate spellings: If "wooly" doesn't work, try "woolly" or just "wool".
